I got to spend a Sunday morning with the K Family. Working with a large family is always an exciting challenge and you never quite know how each child will respond to having their photos taken. Some will eagerly pose, while others may be more hesitant. It's all about finding a delicate balance and gently coaxing them to let me capture those precious moments in between their "I don't want to" moments. And most of a session with be the 'I don't want to' moments, trust me!
It's important to be prepared and have my camera settings ready because, as quickly as they may want me to snap away, they might just as swiftly revert to saying "no" again. It's all part of the fun and unpredictability of working with families!
When working with children, I've discovered that simply instructing them to pose for photos doesn't give me the results I want. I've learned to approach the situation with a sneaky mindset, where I find opportunities to capture authentic moments while they are engrossed in their own world of play and discovery.
It could be something as simple as S mischievously retrieving Sudocream from her mum's bedside table or exploring the allure of grown-up shoes from the cupboard. It's in these genuine and tender moments, such as snuggling a cherished crochet blanket made by Grandma, which they're reluctant to share with their new baby brother, where the magic truly unfolds. By embracing their unique personalities and activities, I am able to document a micro glimpse into them, as they were that day.
I had none of those challenges with sweet little baby H though. What a chill little guy he is! Wide-eyed, rosy cheeks, and quietly taking in the world around him. He's practically the unicorn baby of newborns and he didn't fuss a single time during the almost 2 hours I was there. Makes me wish my babies were like that.. which they most definitely were not! Haha!
Baby H was born prematurely, and I had to wait a while longer than I normally do when a family book me for newborn family photos. But when I finally got to meet this courageous little one, it was nice to be welcomed into the family's home. You notice right away that pictures and memories hold a special place in their hearts, by the carefully displayed memories adorning the walls and the neat stacks of photo books chronicling the lives of the K Children. You really get a sense of the unwavering commitment to preserving and cherishing the significant moments that shape this family's lives.
With each click of my camera, I got to be a part of the memory keeping of this new chapter in their lives where a family of 5 becomes 6, knowing the importance these images hold for this nurturing and loving family
